Maggie Walker birthday celebration set
The Maggie Walker Birthday Celebration has been announced for July 15th at 3PM at 3rd Street Bethel A.M.E. Church. The program will feature an historical reenactement of Walker’s stirring 1909 speech “Race Unity”, children representing the Independent Order of St.Luke performing historic songs and chants, and three generations of Walker’s descendents providing testimonials reflecting on the meaning of her legacy. Followong the program, birthday cake and lemonade will be served at the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site Visitor Center @ 600 North 2nd Street. [flyer as PDF]

6th District meeting this Saturday
The 6th District’s Council Representative Ellen F. Robertson, chairwoman of council’s finance committee, will discuss the recent budget wranglings and the city’s downtown master plan at a 6th District town meeting on Saturday from 10 AM until noon on the 18th floor of the Bank of America Building at 12th and Main streets.

Foster interviews document the past
The VCU Oral History Archive spotlights a series of 5 interviews with Dr. Francis Merrill Foster, Sr. from 2006. Foster, a neighborhood dentist from 1948-1989 and known as the historian of Jackson Ward, discusses his early background in Jackson Ward, local associations and clubs, and dentistry in the neighborhood.

Jason turned us on to Walk Score, a site that “calculates the walkability of an address by locating nearby stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc.”, part of an effort to recognize the benefits to our health, the environment, and our communities of living in walkable neighborhoods (see also).
