check out Tuesday Verses’ “The Block Party” this Saturday
The Block Party, an outgrowth of Tuesday Verses’ Open Mic Nights and co-sponsored by the Ezibu Muntu African Dance & Cultural Foundation, will feature performances by Ezibu Muntu and Verses’ house band Chicken Grease amidst a day of “freestyle creativity … an opportunity for artists of all ages to become active in their community by sharing their gifts in a street-fair setting.” [via]

17th Annual Down Home Family Reunion this weekend
The 17th Annual Down Home Family Reunion, a celebration of African-American folk life hosted by the Elegba Folklore Society, is this weekend. Saturday, Aug. 18, the free festivities at Abner Clay Park (Belvidere and West Leigh Street, in Jackson Ward) are from 4 to 11 p.m, with artist/producer Pauline Bailey, soul singers The Intruders, Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa, the steel drums of Trinidad by Caribbean Pan Vibes, jazz singer Lady E, children’s activities, demonstrations, and Southern and African-inspired foods. Romeo and Juliet
As part of the Will Power to Youth and Shakespeare Festival/LA, a group of Richmond high school students are putting on an adapted production of Romeo and Juliet set in Jackson Ward in the 1930s. The play will be staged this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Firehouse Theatre. Performances are free; reservations are required.
