VCU offers any resident of Newtowne West who is a paid member of the Newtowne West Civic League free membership to all VCU/MCV Gym facilities. Annual membership in the Newtowne West Civic League costs just $10 for individuals, and $15 for families. [via]

VCU’s Commonwealth Times profiles the Carver Promise. The Carver Promise is still looking for students to volunteer as mentors for this year. If you can commit for a minimum of one school year and volunteer at least one hour a week, contact Casey Rogers at crogers@carverpromise.org.

After linking to the cache of photos from the 1990s, photogrpaher F33 was able to identify a set of abandoned houses in Carver and provide us a more recent photo, towards a great then&now set of photos of a renovation on Bowe Street.

Wilder’s cancelled Gilpin meeting
Mayor L. Douglas Wilder recently canceled a town hall meeting in Gilpin Court, the city’s largest public housing project, where he was expected to unveil plans for the revitalization of Gilpin, Fay Towers and North Jackson Ward. A 2006 plan recommends a new magnet school, mixed-use zoning, and a new 2nd Street bridge. [via]

Center for Research and Technology unveiled

Philip Morris unveiled the new Center for Research and Technology this morning after almost 2 years of construction. The facility is ramping up to almost 500 employees over the next few months. [via]

mandatory water use restrictions (UPDATED)
Due to continuing dry weather patterns causing low water levels in the James River, the City of Richmond is enforcing mandatory water conservation measures. Limits are in effect on how often residents can water lawns and gardens and wash cars. UPDATED 10/23: Vehicle washing is limited to one day per week using a hand-held hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle. Paved area washing is prohibited except for health and safety reasons. [via]
