Black History Museum gets better storage
The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia is in the midst of moving their stored collection of African art, textiles and archival material to an unspecified commercial art-and-archival-storage facility in the area. The work of packaging and transporting the material is being relocated by volunteer museum professionals from Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, the American Civil War Center, the Virginia Historical Society, the Valentine Richmond History Center, the Museum of the Confederacy, the Jamestown/Yorktown Foundation, the Maggie L. Walker House, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the the Sully Historic Site in Fairfax, among others.

Something is in the works at the long empty Eggleston Hotel, with chain-link fencing going up around the landmark building today.

In checking out the artists’ sites for the show Side Streets that opened last night at the new Glave Kocen Gallery, I found these great location paintings by Melissa Burgess (including the look at the house at 3rd and Bates from 2001 seen above).

Crupi report out today
Consultant James A. Crupi today presented “Putting The Future Together”, a report on the current state of Richmond and a look forward, at a public meeting at VCU’s Siegel Center. The RTD has an overview, and you can check out the report in its entirety (2.2MB PDF).

The Built in America collection, part of the American Memory from the Library of Congress, has more than 350,000 photos, drawings, and records documenting “achievements in architecture, engineering, and design in the United States”.

Richmond Downtown Master Plan draft due today
A draft version of the Richmond Downtown Master Plan is scheduled for release today. The draft will be available for review on the City’s web page, at City Hall, and at City libraries and community centers. There will also be an informal work session to receive the draft at noon in City Council Chambers in City Hal. City staff and the planning team will present an overview of the document and answer questions from the Planning Commission. All are welcome to attend to listen to the presentation.

Saturday’s Christmas Parade
The 24th Annual Ukrop’s Christmas Parade will roll east on Broad Street from the Science Museum to 7th Street starting at 10AM this Saturday (12/1). With close to 250,000 people are expected to turn out for the parade, so grab yourself a good spot early!
