more good words for Transmission
The March 2008 issue of Richmond Magazine has a look at Transmission Gallery. The current show (through 3/31) at the gallery is Transmission Introduces Studio 23, an exhibit of “traditional and nontraditional printing methods, etchings, silkscreens and monoprints” featuring the artists of Studio 23, a nonprofit artists’ collective.

Stencil Workshop by Thea Duskin of Ghost Print Gallery
Stencil making is a time tested method of image reproduction useful for many surfaces ranging from fabric to paper to walls. The workshop will be divided into beginner and intermediate sections. Thea will be teaching bristol board stencil techniques, using a stencil knife, and mylar stencil techniques, using both knives and burners. All one needs to bring is an image, if desired. No sign-up necessary. Materials provided. 3/14 4PM $5 @ Gallery5.

A.D. Price Funeral Home sold again
The RTD is reporting that Farmville funeral director Carl U. Eggleston has bought A.D. Price Funeral Home. Eggleston owns funeral homes in Farmville in Prince Edward County and in Crewe in Nottoway County. No changes are planned in the local funeral home’s operation.

Public Safety Meeting @ Broad Street
The regular meeting of the Public Safety Committee of City Council will be moved to the Renaissance Conference Center (107 West Broad Street) on Monday, 3/17 @ 3PM. On the agenda for the meeting are: 1) the need for greater police presence along Broad Street, 2) the need to remove prostitutes, panhandlers, and drug dealers from the area, and 3) the need to improve trash pick-up and interrupted street lighting. This meeting is open to the public; anyone who has an interest in effective and on-going downtown Richmond revitalization is encouraged to attend. [via]

Give City the 4-1-1 on Richmond’s 3-1-1
From the Office of the Press Secretary: Mayor L. Douglas Wilder announced today the beginning of a month-long “Give Us the 4-1-1″ campaign to help the City improve its new 311 Call Center to handle citizen requests for municipal services. Residents can dial 311 to report potholes, downed trees, utility issues, request social services, and other City matters. The campaign, which will run from March 11 through mid-April, is an invitation for City residents who have used the phone system and encountered problems to let the City know what those problems were so they can be corrected and the system improved.

Lucy Goode Brooks to be honored Saturday
Lucy Goode Brooks, the former slave who founded the Friends Asylum for Colored Orphans in 1871 will be honored tomorrow with a new historical marker at Charity and St. Paul Streets. [via]

celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Hood Temple Male Chorus
The Hood Temple Male Chorus will be celebrating their 50th anniversary with performances tonight at Armstrong High School and Sunday afternoon at the church. The RTD has more information and a great slideshow with photos and a recording of the chorus.
