construction set for Belvidere Street Gateway

Construction on the Belvidere Street Gateway (between the I-95 bridge and Clay Street) will begin on Monday and continue through December. This project is intended to “improve pedestrian safety in the area and further enhance the appearance of the Belvidere corridor”, and will also “compliment the adjoining VCU campus improvements”. Expect traffic delays, alternate routes are highly recommended.

SCOPE OF WORKS:

  • Concrete Paver crosswalks at the intersections of Belvidere Street at Leigh Street and Belvidere Street at Clay Street
  • Construct wheelchair ramps at the intersections
  • Provide pavement markings at the intersections
  • Construct brick sidewalks on both sides of Belvidere Street between Leigh Street and Clay Street
  • Place ornamental trees on the median and mulch the designated area
  • Repair and maintain the existing concrete sidewalk on Belvidere Street between the I-95 bridge and the Leigh Street intersection

This is a much needed project. The medians between Smith and Belvidere and across the street near Carver have been looking ratty for a long time. I hope signs will be erected to prevent parking on those medians as part of the work. They were there before the upgrade of Belvidere Street but they disappeared.

Great…this just makes Carver and Jackson Ward more accessible to the Gilpin Court delinquents. We need to wall off Belvedere and 2nd.

    chief-
I hearby appoint you to this project as you seem to know quite a bit about wall construction. Why don’t we ask your neighbor about the last wall (aka privacy fence) you put up? Anyhow you’re just being brash as usual and I will forgive you for it since were friends and all and I understand your concerns….incorporating those on the fringes of our society is what will be truly successfull at addressing your concerns and will only serve to integrate everyone harmoniously. Of coarse this will take generations so the short term concerns you have may be well founded. See how successfull your idea was when it was done 60 years ago in the form of the interstate? It served to bisect one of the most affluent african american communities in the country and create a situation of perpetual blight. If anything we should wall of the northside of town at the river so those VCU kids tag, drink beer, and cause parking problems only on that side of the river. Then we can all take over an island in the James to call our own without fear of the northsiders invading.
