Warris Dudley, optician and owner is marking the 25th anniversery of Dudley Optical Company Inc. this year. He came to Richmond 38 years ago working for the original Galeski Optical. In 1983 he partnered with Dr. Lindley Smith, one of the first black eye surgeons in Richmond, in a shop at 2nd and Clay before opening his own shop at 418 N 1st St in November 1985.

CAA Tournament this weekend at the Coliseum

VCU will be competing for the CAA Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament this weekend at the Coliseum. Today the Rams trounced the Deleware Blue Hens 66-49 to advance to the 2nd Round on Saturday. Games will be played throught the weekend ending with the Championship Game Monday night. This should generate a lot of extra traffic and out-of-town visitors wandering downtown streets looking for a place to eat. Help them out share some of Richmond’s secrets and your favorite places to eat.

First Fridays Expands East
An expanded First Fridays leads of a big weekend in Jackson Ward. For the next three months First Fridays East will venues around the Richmond Convention Center and CenterStage.

On March 5, April 2, and May 7, 2010, from 5-8 pm…“First Fridays East” is our new spring project that showcases the best in arts and culture at four of Downtown’s most awe-inspiring locations, and we’re very excited by this new partnership and encourage you to join us Friday night, March 5 as we “head east”!
All events are free and open to the public.

First Fridays East at Richmond.comFree Parking is available between 5:30-8pm at the Library of Virginia underground parking garage and at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Parking Garage at the corner of 8th and Grace Streets. Visitors to St. Paul’s parking deck can enter anytime between 5:30-8:30 and can exit anytime that evening. Downtown also offers ample street parking and many paid honor parking lots.

Romances beyond the grave at Shockoe Hill Cemetery

Vigil held for Reginal Lee
The RTD reported A vigil was held for murder victim Reginal Lee on Sunday:
On the stoop, … where Lee’s relatives said he was found, Keisha Miller arranged the pieces of a makeshift shrine for Lee, her lifelong friend. Pictures, T-shirts, hand-printed signs and stuffed animals, most with Lee’s name and farewell messages, were arranged on the floor and taped to the wall. [...] The vigil lasted for more than an hour, with the mood shifting between peaceful reflection and loud, piercing wails.

Gallery Submission Calls For 2010

Gallery 5 will be celebrating its 5th anniversery in 2010 with 4 juried shows and a month long birthday celebration in March.
February 2010:
Sleight of Hand 2: A National Juried Craft Competition
The Sleight of Hand II exhibition at Gallery5 seeks craft-makers who push the boundaries and definitions of craft. Craft-making is too often pigeon-holed into traditional definitions of basic utilitarian objects in clay, glass, wood, or metal. In reality, most craft-makers are not unlike fine artists in many respects. They push new concepts, introduce new materials and techniques, expand old techniques and use traditional materials in new ways. Gallery5 invites craft-makers fitting this criteria to submit their works to Sleight of Hand II. Read more >
