100% of neighborhood schools make AYP (86% city-wide, 75% state-wide)
According to a report issued this morning by the VA Dept. of Education, all of the neighborhood schools met the adequate yearly progress (AYP) standards of No Child Left Behind this year, in contrast to 75% statewide and 85% across the city.

Bey seeking 2nd District Council seat
The RTD has a list of people who have already submitted papers with the city’s office of the general registrar indicating that they will run for office this November. Candidates have until June 10th to file. So far, Tyrone Bey is the only candidate for the 2nd District City Council seat being vacated by Pantele in his bid for mayor, and no challengers have stepped forth for 2nd District School Board Representative Lisa Dawson.

Carver Elementary worth highlighting
Carver Elementary, along with Albert Hill Middle School, Armstrong High School and the Capital City Program, were the stops on a tour intended to highlight the strengths and successes of the system.
At Carver, the highlights were decidedly user-friendly. Among the many highlights Principal Iris Page touted was the “Reading is Fundamental” program. It encourages students to read more and backs up the challenge with books. In the past three years, students have taken home more than 10,000 free books. [via]

Maggie Walker Governor’s School 2nd in nation in Knowledge Master Open
The Maggie Walker Governor’s School finished second in the nation in the recent Knowledge Master Open, a computer-based competition of 748 high schools from 49 states and 6 foreign countries. Out of 2,000 possible points, Maggie Walker’s team finished only 2 points behind the first place team, Bergen County Academies of New Jersey. The Maggie Walker team of 22 students was first for its size division (501-1000). Maggie Walker’s team members who are in the 9th grade competed in the Junior High Division of the KMO competition and finished first in the nation with a score of 1733 (in a field of 136 teams from 31 states and 3 foreign countries). Carver-VCU seeks volunteers, supplies
The Carver-VCU Partnership is seeking helpful and friendly volunteers for the Carver-VCU Partnership After School Program. They especially need volunteers with skills in foreign languages, math, and science for the homework assistance and tutoring lab. ACDC student arrested for weapon
A student at the Adult Career Development Center was arrested today for bringing a weapon to school. A security officer found the weapon after stopping a fight between two students. [via]

Carver Elem. and Chandler MS both make AYP
Both schools hit Federal “Adequate Yearly Progress” benchmarks for the 2006-2007 school year, the first time in 6 years for Chandler. Statewide, only 70% of the schools made AYP. The environment at Carver seems primed for continued success this year.

Carver’s summer classes moved for today
Summer programs at G.W. Carver Elementary School will be held at J.E.B. Stuart Elementary School today because of work on the boiler at Carver. Buses will transport students to and from Stuart, at 3101 Fendall Avenue. [via]
