Take Our Stand: the African American Military Experience in the Age of Jim Crow
The American Civil War Center has info on Take Our Stand: the African American Military Experience in the Age of Jim Crow:
Take Our Stand: the African American Military Experience in the Age of Jim Crow is a new exhibit from the American Civil War Center that chronicles the Black military experience from the Spanish-American War to the desegregation of the U.S. military in 1948.
Take Our Stand features rare historic images and documents reproduced from the Center’s John H. Motley Collection, an interactive lesson plan for students, and feedback panels where visitors can record their reactions. Location: Richmond’s Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia from Feb. 5-May 29. Take Our Stand was funded in part by a grant from The Community Foundation.

Freedmen’s Bureau archives now available online
Last week the RTD reported that “an ambitious three-year project to digitize more than 300,000 state records from the Freedmen’s Bureau archives has been completed and now is available online“. A recent email from Stacy Burrs, Chairman of the Board of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, announces that the Black History Museum will be leading “an historic partnership [...] to locate and make available to the public all of the records documenting the marriages of newly freed slaves”.

What is Africa to Me @ Black History Museum
This Friday from 6-8:30PM is the opening reception for What is Africa to Me? at the Black History Museum. This exhibition encourages viewers to use the lenses of Malian history and culture to consider and interpret for themselves the connections between Virginia and Africa. Exhibition created in partnership with the Virginia Friends of Mali. Exhibit runs April 17 – June 20, 2009.

Lee named as executive director of the Black History Museum
Dr.Maureen G. Elgersman Lee, professor at ODU, has been named as the executive director of the Black History Museum according to the Richmond Free Press:
“This is a wonderful opportunity [...] My overall goal is to raise the profile of this institution. I want to make it the go-to place for black history in Richmond and beyond,” said Dr. Elgersman Lee.

Heirlooms by J. W. Robinson Horne @ Black History Museum
The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia will feature a gallery talk this Friday (9/5 6-8PM) in conjunction with the exhibition, Heirlooms by J. W. Robinson Horne, featuring original fashion designs of this native Richmonder. This exhibition features 35 selected designs from his collections: Fall Drama, Paris Inspired, University, Bridal, 1776, Couturier and Spring1950 Collections. Also featured are three designs from his “Carousel of Coats” Collection. These Heirloom Fashion Designs by J. W. Robinson Horne will be on display through September 30, 2008.

interim director Hood to leave Black History Museum
Nicole Hood, interim director of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, is leaving:
Just a year after taking the reins at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, Nicole Hood is leaving to spend more time with her family.
“Everybodys skeptical when you use those terms, Stacy Burrs, chair of the museum’s board, says of the proverbial “family” line. “But this is one of those cases where that is the fact of the matter.”

The Gift of Black Inventors
The folks at the Black History Museum have updated their calendar to announce The Gift of Black Inventors Opening Reception, opening February 1 from 6-8PM.
The Gift of Black Inventors highlights the numerous contributions of Americans of African descent to science and industry. The product of more than twenty-five years of research by its curator James E. Wright, Jr., the exhibition will display more than 125 items that feature inventions from the late 19th century through the present. The Gift of Black Inventors will be on display at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia through July 31, 2008.
