Booker T. Washington on the agenda for Council tonight
A special use permit for the ongoing Booker T. Washington redevelopment looks like the only local issue on the agenda for the June 22 City Council meeting (PDF):
Ord. No. 2009-107 (Patron: Mayor Jones, By Request) – To authorize the special use of *** 21 East Leigh Street and 528 North 1st Street for the purpose of a multifamily dwelling with up to twenty-eight (28) dwelling units and accessory parking ***.

kick-off ceremony @ B.T.Washington

Renovation officially began today with a kick-off ceremony on the historic buildings at 21 East Leigh Street. City’s Community Development Director Rachel Flynn, local developer Kelvin Hanson and Historic Jackson Ward Association President Charles Finley, Mayor Wilder, architect Walter Parks, and Neverette Eggleston all spoke on the past and future of the building and then tours were given of the building.

Booker T. Washington renovation to commence
Folks on Richmond City Watch are reporting that “the renovation of the old Leigh School Building at the corner of 1st and Leigh in Jackson Ward is scheduled to commence this month”. When complete, the building will house approximately 30 apartments as part of an independent living residential complex for Jackson Ward senior citizens who wish to continue living in the historic neighborhood.

senior housing coming to Leigh Street
richmond.com’s popular Ask the Mayor this week answers the question “Are there any plans for a senior apartment complex in the Downtown area?”, saying that “the former school complex at 21 East Leigh Street is being redeveloped into an independent-living senior community”. (UPDATED)
