Warris Dudley, optician and owner is marking the 25th anniversery of Dudley Optical Company Inc. this year. He came to Richmond 38 years ago working for the original Galeski Optical. In 1983 he partnered with Dr. Lindley Smith, one of the first black eye surgeons in Richmond, in a shop at 2nd and Clay before opening his own shop at 418 N 1st St in November 1985.

A new lifeline for the Hippodrome
City Council has approved $600,000 towards the
The decision sets the stage for a developer to convert the Hippodrome Theater and adjoining Taylor Mansion into a live-music and entertainment venue that would open next year one block from the Greater Richmond Convention Center. The project, known as The Hipp, also would include a restaurant, retail space and 31 apartments.

Festival Flags continues to fly
Festival Flags is featured in today’s business section of the RTD:
Millie Jones died two years ago this month, but the flag-making company she created in the 1970s that spawned an industry continues flying.
“People give her credit for starting the decorative-flag movement,” said Dave Edwards, who bought Festival Flags Unlimited in 2005.
“Before Festival Flags, people would fly the American or state flag, but not one to express any other sentiment than patriotism.”

Murder on St.James Street
The Richmond Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred just after 10PM in the 1000 block of St. James Street last night. Police found Reginale N. Lee, 19, whose last known address is the 2300 block of Ambrose St., unresponsive outside an apartment; Lee died at the scene.

Petition circulating on favor of parking restrictions
Jackson Ward neighbors are seeking a parking restriction to help ensure that residents can more readily find parking:
“We have a problem particularly during the day when people who work downtown, city hall, MCV, state, come in to the neighborhood, park their cars and leave them all day,” said Historic Jackson Ward Association President, Charles Finley.
Finley is hoping to change that. He and several other residents have started a petition hoping for signatures from neighbors to make designated areas for residents only.
