John Jasper Day set for Feb.17
Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church will observe its annual John Jasper Day on Sunday February 17, 2008 during its 11 o’clock am worship service. The speaker for this special celebration is Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, Sr., the pastor emeritus of the Cedar Street Baptist Church of God. During the service, Sixth Mount Zion will recognize the works of three citizens with its John Jasper Trailblazer Award given in honor of the church’s founding pastor. This year, the 2008 awards will be presented to Reginald Gordon, CEO of the Richmond Red Cross, Dr. Patricia Gould-Champ, Founder of the Faith Community Baptist Church, and Senator Henry l. Marsh, III..

overflow shelter at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church
The Richmond Free Press’ “Overflow shelter for homeless at Sixth Mount Zion” profiles Sixth Mount Zion’s transformation on nights when forecasts call for temperatures below 35 degrees. The church on Duvall Street was selected for the city-financed program because of the church’s central location and active in community outreach programs.

John Jasper
Waiting for a table a few nights ago at Croaker’s Spot, I picked up up a pamphlet about John Jasper published Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. The church has a special memorial room and museum to honor the memory of the founder of the church and preacher of the historic “De Sun Do Move” sermon.
